Fantastic Paine's Celery Compound promotional book from 1899. This 35 page booklet is an advertisement for the quack medicine featuring testimonials from many notable Victorian socialites, politicians and clergymen. Each page contains a gorgeously illustrated black and white drawing of these famous society members along with a short paragraph about who they are. Some notable people mentioned are William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Sarah Bernhardt, George Dewey and John Jacob Astor. Admittedly, most of these people do not explicitly endorse the product, but their images are used regardless.
This piece is a wonderful example of late 19th century illustration and the unregulated quack medicine that was so prevalent--and dangerous--during the time period.
